Joel Simpson

A New Jersey native, I've been photographing since I was a teenager in the 1960s. A 35mm amateur for most of my life—while I earned a doctorate in comparative literature from Brown; taught college English, French and Italian; pursued jazz piano for 22 years and created prize-winning multi-media music software (Dick Hyman’s Century of Jazz Piano CD-ROM) that sold worldwide—I began photographing in medium format in 2002, and digital in 2005.

In April, May and part of June of 2014, I went on a 10-week 12-country round-the-world tour, which I planned with a traveling companion. Since then I have lectured on world travel and photography and shown a number of images from the trip in exhibitions. A two-week trip around Northern and Central California in August, 2015, expanded my inventory of geological and botanical images.

Grayson Dantzic

Grayson Dantzic's music photography career began as a natural progression from his passionate work as an archivist. Starting with creating a book from his late father Jerry Dantzic's Archives, he then worked with the Warner Music Group Archives. These opportunities gave him access to process and research some of his favorite musicians’ files and to learn from studying many legendary image makers. He was also given special invitation to attend artists' showcases, plaque presentations, and other insider events where he made the most of his experiences to document. Jazz photography is another love of his, having had the honor of working with and learning from his dear friends Hugh Bell and Chuck Stewart.

Grayson is also a songwriter and musician and a fan of inspired music wherever and whenever it presents itself, which is almost all the time in New York City! His work has been published in Billboard, Downbeat, and Elmore Magazine. Grayson is a board member and the Executive VP of the American Photography Archives Group [APAG], Project Archivist for the Paul Seligman Collection at the Metropolitan Opera Archives, a board member of ASMPNY and the Archivist for ASMP. His mentor, Phoebe Jacobs, Executive VP of the Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation, always told him: “make every minute count.” Those words of wisdom, in addition to gaining access and having the right equipment, serve as his mantra!

Stefan Falke

Over the last ten years I traveled to most major and some smaller cities on both sides of the 2000 miles long U.S. - Mexico border and photographed about 200 painters, photographers, musicians, writers, dancers, architects and art promoters in order to shine a spotlight on the vibrant cultural activities and cross-border opportunities that exist despite the tremendous challenges in this bi-national region.

The region has particular significance to me since I was born and grew up in Germany where a border divided my country in East and West until it came down in 1989. Meanwhile the steel ‘wall’ between the US and Mexico is growing in length and height and does its part to create a physiological and physical barrier between the United States and Mexico.

In the last year I have been focussing on artists who work specifically with border and migration related issues and/or are migrants themselves, like Artists Fronterizas, the three opera singing women who perform on both sides to promote cross border culture (their story here ), or photographer Tom Kiefer (last photo) who collects and photographs migrants possessions taken from them and thrown away by the border patrol (his story here ), or Haitian painter Nixon Tervine, whose journey through all of South America ended in Mexicali, Mexico, and who sells his art to motorists crossing the border north (his story here ), or artist Alvaro Enciso who puts up crosses in the Sonoran Desert to remember migrants who did not survive the long journey north (his story here ).

I am trying to show that most people on both sides of the US – Mexico border are very passionate about their bi-national region and the unique opportunities and cross-border collaborations and friendships that come with it. I chose artists for my project because they always seem to have a finger on the pulse of their communities, and reflect their status in real time; I believe they deserve our attention. I hope my project is adding a positive and humanitarian aspect to the usual negative storylines about the border region and the people who live and work there.

Zay Yar Lin

An internationally published and award winning photographer from Myanmar. I've been into photography since 2014. My favorite styles of photography are culture, portraits and landscape which tell stories of the people and sense of the place.

I’ve run photography workshops in Myanmar. I have showcased my works at many exhibitions and been published all around the world. I’ve won numerous international and local photography awards. Jason Gardner

We the Spirits

In the heart of winter, some very ancient rituals are still performed throughout Europe and beyond, to secure prosperity and good harvests. Such rituals are the original core of what today is commonly known as 'Carnival.

Despite how it is often perceived in modern media, this annual event is much more than a party and parade in the streets. Dating from pre-Christian times, this celebration reveals a complex diversity of local customs intersecting with universal themes: winter and spring; life and death; light and dark; chaos and order. It's a moment to celebrate the cycle of the seasons, excise the winter darkness, and look forward to spring.

For over 15 years, throughout 16 countries, I have visually documented the ritual and festival of Carnival, focusing on traditional, folkloric, and community celebrations.

In a time of screens, computers and A.I. simulations, there’s a movement back to the analog and gritty experience of Carnaval, back to tradition and to feeling something more primal, animal, and pagan.

Collaborating with ethnographers and local experts to find the most folkloric living manifestations, I combine in situ portraiture with brief quotes from the participants, for a deeper exploration into this manifestation of the human spirit.

Jason Gardner is an American photographer, based in Paris and New York. He tells stories, using photography and writing, within the framework of Visual Anthropology. He is passionate about culture, ritual, and music and how they impact human expression.

In 2013, Jason published A Flower in the Mouth, a book of photography and writing about the culture, music and rituals of Carnaval in Pernambuco, Brazil.

The series was selected as the Top 50 portfolio by Photolucida’s Critical Mass, 2022. https://www.photolucida.org/top-50/jason-gardner/?cm_year=2022

Jason’s work has appeared in The New York Times, Rolling Stone, Photo District News, New York Magazine, NPR.org, and SPIN Magazine.

A ten-page portfolio of his work was published in GEO Magazine France. https://photo.geo.fr/carnaval-du-monde-loeil-du-photographe-jason-gardner-49065

Jason Gardner presents his photographic series “Portraits of Carnaval,” showing the range of artistry of those participating in the festival in Brazil, Louisiana, France, Sardinia, Guinea-Bissau, and Trinidad. Having published the photography book A Flower in the Mouth showing the culture, music and rituals of the authentic, folkloric Carnaval festival in Pernambuco, Brazil, the next book will be about the Carnavals of the world.

In his work, he seeks the ineffable moment when people transform, when they transcend normal lives to connect with what they view as sacred, and embody their culture, heritage, and identity. Democratic and folkloric, it reveals a complexity and diversity of religion and ritual. He looks for the common thread binding those who uphold the tradition as they prepare costumes, rehearse dance and music, and observe their private rituals. For those who practice it year after year, Carnaval is more than a huge party: it is a proud way of life.

Anya Anti

An internationally published and award winning photo artist from Ukraine now based in New York, USA. I've been into photography since 2009. I've always been a creative person – as a child I was good at painting and crafts. As my passion for art grew I fell in love with photography and started shooting the world around me. As a self-taught I gained all my knowledge and inspiration through social media and online photography communities. A year-and-a-half later, I started creating fine art surrealistic female portraits, which became my preferable genre and a hallmark of my work.

Installations, costumes and Photoshop manipulation help me to embody my fantasies into a finished piece of art. I shoot mostly with old vintage manual lenses like Helios and Petzval. Their imperfections help me be more creative and achieve that dreamy effect.

As a workshop instructor, I have already taught in different countries. I have showcased my work at exhibitions and been published all around the globe. In 2015 I was a lucky winner of Broncolor GenNEXT sponsorship.

I'm a dreamer. Photography is not only what I love and what I do, it’s also a gentle and romantic side of me. It's a reflection of my deep emotions, passion for unknown and craving for beauty. What I’m trying to show is a beautiful image, but also tell a story, convey an idea and play with associations.

My images are fairytale-like, mystic, feminine, fragile and thoughtful. And if you listen carefully my silent pictures will tell a story.

Bill Wadman

Bill Wadman is an American portrait photographer living in Brooklyn, New York. His images have been seen on the covers and pages of major publications throughout the world.  His conceptual portrait work has been shown in both solo and group exhibitions throughout the US and Canada.  Equally at home connecting with subjects behind the camera and perfecting their image in front of a computer - Bill's technical skills are more than matched by his natural eye for what makes a great photograph. Notoriously obsessive and rarely satisfied; Bill is interested in just about every subject, prefers to paint his own backgrounds, build his own Macs, and perhaps most ironically, does not like getting his picture taken as a general rule of thumb.

Jeremy Lips

Jeremy’s foray into photography is a result of his lifelong interest in two things, stage lighting and advertising.  It was during college that a light bulb went on and Jeremy combined his two interests into one passion, photography.

Jeremy offers his clients a one-of-a-kind experience during the image making process. His understanding of the ins-and-outs of the design process help him visualize not just the resulting image, but how that image relates to and interacts with the final design concept.

He has often been described as a visual problem solver with a keen eye for color and composition who creates images that exceed expectations and deliver results.

Children of Fire:

These Slides have been recovered from the ashes after a devastating house fire on Easter night 2016. They no longer give any information on what was originally captured, but the extreme heat together with water created new beauty.

Faces  From San Carlos:  Testimonies from victims of the civil war in Colombia

Colombian Resilience - these photographs have been shown at the parliament house of Pereira where the politicians had to walk by them to their assembly hall, and could read, if they even bothered, the testimonies of these family members of victims of the decades long civil war in Colombia.

American Temples:

Between New York City and Lakewood on Route 9 South in New Jersey there are still old fashion diners and fast food temples. They represent both places of gathering and isolation.
I photographed at night, when the black sky separates the lit or glowing objects from their surrounding environment. The patrons are mostly gone and the spaces remain similar to light sculptures. You might see some late food seekers, but the only movements you notice are the flags in the wind.
For me these pictures stand for monuments of the American culture.

Olga Torrey

I was born in Russia, in the eastern region of The Ural Mountains, chilled by Siberian air. I came to New York City and immediately fell in love with it. I followed my heart for fine arts and became a “Life Member” of The Art Student League School. Later, I discovered scuba diving and bought my first underwater camera. I never stopped taking photos underwater. I believe that my images of marine life show the wonder of what lies below. I hope my images will inspire people to preserve this beautiful world for future generations. When I'm not diving I explore coexistence of urban wildlife and humans to my available proximity. The outdoors are my artistic studio where I passionately create my images. As a fine artist I have exhibited in NYC in different venues: art galleries, public libraries, banks and coffee shops. As an underwater photographer, I have written and published articles in different scuba magazines, including: InVetrum, X-Ray Magazine, Northeast Dive News, Dive UK and The Ultimate Depth. I give presentations on underwater photography and scuba diving in NYC and around world. I love making photographs and spending a good amount of time on personal projects and accepting assignments where I have the opportunity to travel. To see more of my work visit www.fitimage.nyc

Larry Cohen

As a young child I spent summer weekends at my grandparent’s house on the Delaware Bay in NJ. I would spend hours facedown in the shallow water wearing a mask, snorkel and fins observing the local marine life. I announced to my parents that I wanted to become a scuba diver and underwater photographer. This made my overprotective mother very nervous. She said to my father: ”SCUBA DIVING is dangerous! Please do something to get this crazy idea out of our son’s head." The next day my dad said: “If you want to take photos underwater you need to learn how to take photos above water.” Without hesitation I said: “When do we start?” Now I am a photojournalist that specializes in the underwater environment. My passion is to capture the essence of the exotic and commonplace locations I explore. My photos have been used in textbooks, field guides and publications including Sport Diver, Scuba Diving, Alert Diver, Diver, Immersed, Advanced Diver, Sub Aqua Journal, and Northeast Dive News. I give presentations and photo workshops around the world and I am a founding member of the NY Underwater Photographic Society. When not underwater I spend way too much time at a desk at B&H Photo answering chats and emails. I could be reached at B&H at uw@bhphoto.com. To see more of my work take a look at www.liquidimagesuw.com My gear consist of Olympus OM-D EM1 cameras with both Olympus and Panasonic lenses. Underwater using ultra wide-angle or macro lenses are key to images quality. I use Aquatica housings, Fantasea Line LED lights and Sea & Sea strobes.

I am inspired by wildlife, nature as well as visiting different and exciting countries, cultures and experiences.  Capturing the majesty of wildlife, the beauty of nature, or aspects of humanity - peoples, places and cultures has been transformational.

I hope that by sharing the charm and beauty of nature and its species, you'd too be transformed as I've been, to like - better still love - them enough not to harm them.

My most recent project, Every Woman I Know, is a series of portraits depicting every woman I personally know who has been a victim of sexual violence. Everyone who participates is photographed anonymously, and those who elect to have a public portrait done are photographed both ways. This further emphasizes that despite the safety of many voices and the movement of #MeToo, many women still do not feel comfortable coming forward publicly, and this is visibly represented by how many women only participate anonymously. In these exceedingly hostile times, the voices of women need to be echoed more than ever, and our stories need to be heard. By standing together, we can change the perception that this is not a serious or frequent issue and bring attention to how necessary a shift is in our society's values regarding women and our place in it.

Marcia Lloyd

I have been photographing a mother, Gwenda, and her two teenage daughters for four years--2011, 2012, 2014, and 2016--once a year, beginning when Rachel, the older sister, was 19 and Natalie, the younger one, was 11 (by 2014, Rachel was no longer a teenager).

I wanted to explore the complex developmental challenges facing all of them at this time: redefining their relationship and reinventing their individual identities as well as the accompanying sense of alienation. The primary questions for Rachel and Natalie are "Who am I apart from my mother, in my new identity as a woman? Where do I belong?" Gwenda is faced with similar questions: "Who am I apart from my children? Who will I be when the nest is empty? With my daughters in their prime and me in in middle age, who am I as a woman?"

Searching for the mysterious in the mundane has inspired me as an artist since the age of 12. Years ago I converted my Canon camera into an infrared camera. Capturing the radiant heat off of  a landscape as opposed to just registering it's physical details, the resulting images are a wonderful discovery, and a visual treasure hunt. I invite you to take a breath and enter these photographs as one enters into a meditation, and enjoy- if only for a moment- the beauty of nature.

Can you imagine if you were on the last drop? You get on the train expecting to get out at Atlantic Station and end up hitting the Atlantic Ocean instead. Seeing these massive mechanisms being tossed into the ocean like a toy in the bathtub is a ping in my heart. I have always been attached to these machines, their surreal beauty integrated into their functional engineering At first I was stunned the moments of violent recycling, watching the water quickly adapt to its new under water houses. After being pushed and stacked like a sardine in these subways cars o ver the past decade, it is nice to see the sardine actually getting one of these a s its new steel condo. These unbelievable photographs were captured over the pa st three years from Delaware to South Carolina. Since the 1600's man has artificially created reefs. The Metropolitan Transit Authority's recycling program has been involved for the past decade, retiring over 2500 subways cars to the ocean to help rebuild under water reefs along the eastern seabed. These are my images, secon ds before these mass transit vessels join histor y in building homes for life under the sea.

This ongoing project for me came about as a sort of joke with some photographer friends. All of us have had a fascination with classic cars. A handful of us took it a step further with the #carspotting and we ramped it up significantly. The beautiful thing about photo challenges is that they sharpen your eye. As I discovered more and more cars in my own city and in my travels I questioned whether they had been unleashed so that I could photograph them or was it due to our #carspotting mission that I was spotting them more. Suddenly they were everywhere!

As it evolved, my kids began asking questions about them and how they had never seen many of those out on the streets before. And it was true. Many of these cars were slowly vanishing. Some are impractical, others have very little support for spare parts and others are just plain clunky to drive, But, all of them possess great beauty in design that modern cars simply do not have.

Today, I see this ongoing series as a sort of preservation of cars "out in the wild." I never photograph them at car meetups or showrooms. Always "out in the wild" where one day they will vanish--sadly.  I find them on the streets, in driveways, sometimes out on the open road.

#carspotting has made me a sharper photographer and spotter but it has also, perhaps, extended the charm of these beauties.  One can always look them up on Google or Wikipedia and see stock photos. I prefer them out in the wild, in their natural habitat: being used and driven with great pleasure.

THE LAND OF SILENCE

The Idea of creating The Land of Silence collection happened when I had an exclusive experience to spend a night in autumn at Shahdad Desert in Iran. Experience during which these huge and solid rocks turn on and off in an unbelievable way. Once you look around in horizon you witness one rock standing alight and the other in the Dark.Deep thoughts are of no use. Boundaries between Illusion and scientific understanding have faded away.

Images of this collection is my creation based on that experience. Whatever it is, It has surrounded my thoughts and soul far and miles deep into my very existence.

I have been traveling the world most of my life in search of photographs that tell a story or makes you think, “I don’t have a bad life.”  I remember each and every one in these photos as if I had taken them yesterday.  The power of their eyes and some not even looking at the camera have a power like no other.  These people have nothing compared to me and I learned that was only a material thing.  They had life and family and they showed it.  They allowed me into their lives and I always hope that I could leave them with a smile.  These are but a few of the many people’s lives I have gotten to be invited into and it has changed my life forever.

This project combines portrait and reportage photography with a textual history and contemporary perspective of the communities known as Denotified and Nomadic Tribes – around 200 communities who can be found across India. In 1871, the British colonial government enacted the “Criminal Tribes Act” to control supposedly ‘criminal’ communities. Despite the Act’s repeal in 1952 – five years after India gained her independence - these communities continue to have their livelihoods and dignity stripped away. Today they are like ghosts in their own country. Most live on the fringes of society in temporary encampments and extreme poverty. Without permanent housing, they lack official identity and cannot access vital social services or even cast their votes. Education becomes a luxury when children are needed to earn money for the family.  Caught in cycles of intergenerational prostitution, a lack of education, and a fear of authority, these once proud communities are amongst India’s most dispossessed. The younger generations are often unaware of the root of these circumstances. But a group of activists are currently fighting for awareness and their long-awaited freedom from this criminal legacy.

Elliot Landy

In the turbulent 1960s, the Vietnam War was raging. Young Americans

were redefining themselves and the society in which they lived by challenging and rejecting traditional values and the so-called “establishment”. The frontiers of civil and personal consciousness were being pushed beyond their limits… inspired and energized by the messages of hope, freedom and change that burst forth in rich psychedelic colors from a hot, pulsating new music genre that would rapidly envelop an entire generation and alter the course of history.

It was during this time that Elliott Landy picked up his camera to record and document this nation’s spiritual awakening through the eyes of the “Woodstock Generation.” Working with underground newspapers, his press pass and camera not only gave him access to the political scene but also provided him a personal entry into the new rock music counterculture. In less than two years his celebrated images included Bob Dylan (Nashville Skyline), The Band (Music From Big Pink, and The Band), Janis Joplin (Big Brother & The Holding Company: Cheap Thrills), Van Morrison (Moondance), Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, and the Woodstock Festival of which he was one of the official photographers. Landy became one of the first "music photographers" to be recognized as an "artist."

Elliott's iconic photographs of Dylan and The Band during the years they resided and recorded in the small arts colony of Woodstock, NY captured the attention of a new generation seeking spiritual and artistic freedom. His imagery has become synonymous with the town, the famed 1969 Music Festival and the utopian spirit of the Woodstock Generation.

Since 1967 Elliott’s work has been exhibited and published worldwide. He is also the author of 9 books and the architect of a new software program that blends both still and moving imagery with music to create an interactive sound and visual experience that has never been seen before.
